Feeding Therapy

For children who experience significant anxiety, sensory aversion, or distress around eating, stand-alone dietary advice isn't enough. Our feeding therapy sessions use a gentle, evidence-based approach to help your child build a positive, lifelong relationship with food.

Welcome to the Food Laboratory: What is Feeding Therapy?

If your child treats the dinner table like a high-stakes negotiation or a "no-go" zone, you aren't alone. Feeding therapy isn't about forced bites or "cleaning the plate." At Munch.kin, feeding therapy is an evidence-based approach designed to transform mealtimes from a source of stress into a space of curiosity, confidence, and comfort.

Think of it as a bridge between where your child is now and a world of nutritional variety. We don't just focus on the what - we focus on the how and the why.

We look at the whole picture - sensory preferences, motor skills, and emotional comfort - to help your child safely explore new textures and flavours at their own pace.

  • Best suited for: picky eating, food neophobia (fear of new foods), sensory food aversions, and children struggling to transition to solids or family foods.

  • Our approach: Neuro-affirming, sensory-aware, and completely pressure-free. All feeding therapy sessions are rooted in Responsive Feeding Therapy. Most importantly, they are fun, playful and creative.

It’s Not Just "Messy Play" - It’s Progress

For many children, a new food can feel overwhelming or even scary. Feeding therapy uses the power of therapeutic play to lower those defensive walls. By removing the pressure to "eat it," we allow the brain to process the sensory properties of food safely.

Sometimes, the biggest breakthroughs happen when we shift how we feed, rather than just what we feed. These dedicated parent education sessions focus on the big picture of family nutrition. We work together to take the stress out of the kitchen and establish a trusting, joyful mealtime dynamic.

Implementing responsive feeding practices, understanding the Division of Responsibility in feeding, navigating mealtime behaviours, and reducing parental anxiety around growth and intake.

Food as a Science Experiment

We treat the kitchen like a laboratory. When we look at food through the lens of a scientist, we take the emotion out of the experience. Instead of deciding if a food is "good" or "bad," we ask:

  1. Acoustics: Does it crunch like a cracker or squish like a sponge?

  2. Chemistry: What happens to the color when we add lemon juice?

  3. Physics: If we freeze this yogurt, does it change shape?

By investigating the properties of food, children build "sensory intelligence." They become experts on their food rather than being intimidated by it.

Cooking: The Ultimate Power Shift

In feeding therapy, the child moves from being a passive consumer to an active creator. When a child helps "cook" or prepare a meal, they gain a sense of autonomy and control.

  • No-Pressure Exposure: Chopping, stirring, and seasoning are all forms of high-level sensory interaction that don't involve the mouth.

  • Skill Building: We work on the fine motor skills needed to manage different textures.

  • Ownership: A child is far more likely to try a "Galaxy Smoothie" they designed themselves than a pre-made one handed to them.

Is Feeding Therapy Right for Your Family?

Feeding therapy is beneficial for children who:

Have a very limited repertoire of "safe" foods.

Experience anxiety or meltdowns at mealtimes.

Gag, cough, or struggle with specific textures.

Have underlying medical or sensory processing needs.

My Goal: To help your child move at their own pace until their "food world" feels big, bright, and delicious.
